SBOE Ratliff: Evolution and Climate Change Are Fact? #txlege #txed

Thomas Wood, a resident of District 9, had this to say in response to SBOE Thomas Ratliff’s complaining comments in a KLTV story:

Apparently our State Board of Education member Thomas Ratliff (paid lobbyist for Microsoft) thinks that adopting textbooks for our children is funny. “I find it laughable” he was quoted as saying last night. Evolution and climate change are facts in his world. This despite that global warming has been proven to be pretty much a hoax by those with a political agenda. I’m not laughing Mr. Ratliff!!! Shame on you. I suppose you can’t be bothered with such menial task as selecting textbooks for our children for years to come. Perhaps if you were getting kickbacks from Pearson then you would find this task more appealing.

Here is a link to the story Wood was responding to:

I concur, Mr. Wood.  Too, I would add that if Ratliff believes his SBOE job is above his expertise, as evident in the comment below, then might I suggest Ratliff immediately step down and let someone who truly cares about doing what is right for Texas education take his place.

“To ask me – a business degree major from Texas Tech University – to distinguish whether the Earth cooled 4 billion years ago or 4.2 billion years ago for purposes of approving a textbook at 10:15 on a Thursday night is laughable,” Ratliff said.

Ratliff is a registered lobbyist for the last 12 years and currently serves on the board’s Committee on School Finance/Permanent School Fund.

Ratliff represents citizens in the following counties: Anderson, Angelina, Bowie, Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Delta, Fannin, Franklin, Grayson, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Marion, Morris, Nacogdoches, Panola, Rains, Red River, Rockwall, Rusk, Shelby, Smith, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood.

(h/t Alice Linahan) State Board of Education official Thomas Ratliff should be impeached because:

  • Thomas Ratliff is a paid Microsoft lobbyist- this is a conflict of interest with the SBOE (State Board of Education) Texas Education Code: Subchapter A, Section 7.103 (c):

Ratliff’s lobbyist status is a conflict of interest with the SBOE (State Board of Education) Texas Education Code: Subchapter A, Section 7.103 (c):

(c) A person who is required to register as a lobbyist under Chapter 305, Government Code, by virtue of the person’s activities for compensation in or on behalf of a profession, business, or association related to the operation of the board, may not serve as a member of the board or act as the general counsel to the board.
  • Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation (Microsoft) is funding the Federal Take over of Education through the Common Core Philosophy of Education!
  • CSCOPE is the Common Core Philosophy of Education!
  • CSCOPE/Common Core = Federal Take Over of Education!

Your child’s education is being affected!

So, we, the parents teachers/educators and taxpayers of Texas, call upon the state House of Representatives to file a RESOLUTION OF IMPEACHMENT and remove THOMAS RATLIFF from the Texas SBOE for his conflict of interest that affects all Texans. Furthermore, we, the parents, teachers and taxpayers of Texas expect the state HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES to request the ETHICS COMMISSION REPORTS to REVIEW HIS LOBBY ACTIVITIES and pursue any other CONFLICTS OF INTEREST HE MAY BE ENGAGED IN THAT ARE NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE OF TEXAS.

On March 29, 2011, Thomas Ratliff testified glowingly before the Senate Education Committee for SB 6/HB 6, which transitioned Texas from textbooks to online techbooks. SB 6/HB 6 contained specific language that transformed the payout of the Permanent School Fund (PSF). Thomas Ratliff omitted in his testimony that he is and has been a registered Microsoft lobbyist for over 12 years. In fact, Ratliff’s largest client is Microsoft. He has a vested interest in the State Board of Education (SBOE) and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) purchasing Microsoft products. Thomas Ratliff’s conflict of interest has directly impacted and shifted the balance of how the SBOE and TEA decide upon educational tech spending of Microsoft products because Thomas Ratliff sits on the SBOE committee that oversees the PSF.
